Asset breadth: a genuine one-account broker
The defining feature of Interactive Brokers is breadth. From a single account you can trade futures, stocks, options and forex across a large number of global exchanges, alongside bonds and funds. For traders who want their futures day-trading and their long-term equity portfolio under one roof, very few brokers come close.
That coverage is a real differentiator versus futures-only brokers. If you scalp index futures intraday but also hold shares and write options, IBKR removes the need for multiple accounts. As of our last test, the global market access remained a standout — though exactly which markets and instruments you can reach depends on your account approvals and region, so check current availability for your situation.
IBKR Pro vs IBKR Lite
IBKR splits into two tiers. IBKR Lite targets simpler, lower-volume traders with commission-free US stock and ETF trading, in exchange for a more basic order-routing model. IBKR Pro targets active and professional traders, with tiered or fixed commissions, sophisticated smart order routing and the lowest overall costs for high volume.
For active futures and options traders, Pro is usually the right tier thanks to its routing and pricing. For occasional stock buyers, Lite can be enough. Commissions, margin rates and any account minimums change over time, so check current pricing before opening an account and match the tier to how you actually trade.
The platform: powerful but demanding
IBKR’s flagship platform is Trader Workstation (TWS) — an extremely capable desktop application with advanced charting, a huge range of order types, options analytics and risk tools. For experienced traders, it is one of the most complete platforms available. There is also a lighter IBKR Desktop, a web Client Portal and a capable mobile app.
The honest downside is the learning curve. TWS exposes so many features at once that complete beginners often feel lost. We recommend new users start with the simpler interfaces or paper-trading account and grow into TWS over time. The power is there once you invest the effort — but expect that effort to be real.
Costs and margins
On cost, Interactive Brokers is consistently among the cheapest for active traders. Commissions on Pro are low and scale well with volume, and margin rates are typically among the lowest in the industry, which matters a great deal for traders who borrow to hold positions.
Be aware that low margin and leverage amplify losses as well as gains — cheap borrowing is not a reason to over-leverage. Some real-time data feeds and exchange subscriptions also carry separate monthly fees, so factor those into your total cost. Trading carries substantial risk, and IBKR’s low costs do not change that fundamental reality.
Who Interactive Brokers is for
IBKR is best for the serious, multi-asset trader who values low costs and global reach and is willing to learn a demanding platform. Active futures and options traders, cost-sensitive investors and anyone wanting one account for many asset classes will find a lot to like.
It is a weaker fit for the complete beginner who wants a clean, simple app and hand-holding — those users may be happier starting somewhere more streamlined and migrating to IBKR later. If breadth and price are your priorities, Interactive Brokers is one of the strongest brokers in the world.
